At its heart, HydroShield is a student-led initiative aimed at improving access to safe and consistent water supply in rural communities across West Bengal. The project is built on the idea that addressing water scarcity requires a dual approach. One that focuses not only on providing immediate solutions, but also on providing communities with the knowledge and tools that they need, to manage water resources independently. By therefore integrating infrastructure support, with other elements like education and research, the project seeks to create a more holistic response within people when it comes to water-related challenges.
In its early stages, HydroShield is focused on developing a set of targeted interventions, including the design and distribution of household-level water purification kits, the creation of multilingual educational resources on water safety and hygiene, and the exploration of sustainable solutions such as tubewell construction in water-stressed regions. Alongside these efforts, the project also looks forward to spreading knowledge through a series of articles that focus on the many causes of water scarcity across India.Â
